What the SmartGoggles do

Therabody’s second-generation SmartGoggles are wearable eye-area devices that combine three modalities — gentle heat, targeted vibration, and a kneading massage at the temples, brow, and forehead — to address the most common triggers of tension headaches, screen-induced eye strain, and pre-sleep anxiety. They are designed to be used in short sessions, anywhere, including in flight or at a desk between calls.

How they work

The standout feature is SmartSense, a biometric sensor that reads the user’s heart rate and synchronizes the vibration pattern to it. As the heart rate slows during a session, the vibrations slow with it, providing a biofeedback-style cue to the autonomic nervous system. The temperature is held in a comfortable warm range that increases circulation to the periorbital tissues without irritation. A complete 100% light blockage helps the brain register “darkness” — the primary cue for melatonin release — regardless of the room.

The three modes

  • SmartRelax: A general daytime relaxation program suitable for breaks throughout the day.
  • Headache and Eye Fatigue Relief: Targeted heat and massage for accumulated tension after long screen sessions.
  • Sleep Preparation: Slower temple massage paired with vibration patterns that down-shift heart rate and breathing.

Who benefits most

The SmartGoggles fit a specific clinical profile well: people whose stress concentrates in the head and face, screen-heavy workers, frequent travelers who need to fall asleep on demand, and patients with mild tension-type headaches who want a non-pharmaceutical option. They pair well with vagal-tone work (Sensate), magnesium glycinate at night, and a basic sleep-hygiene protocol.

What to expect

Most users report a noticeable drop in head and eye tension within a single ten-to-fifteen-minute session, with cumulative benefits — easier sleep onset, fewer tension headaches — emerging over two to three weeks of consistent use. Battery life is 180 minutes per charge, so daily use is practical. The Therabody app adds sound therapy and lets users customize temperature and vibration to their preference.

How we use them in protocols

We recommend the SmartGoggles as part of an evening wind-down: fifteen minutes in Sleep Preparation mode, in a dark and cool room, an hour before bed. For patients with tension headaches we add a daytime session during the work afternoon, when the cumulative screen load is highest. They are tools, not treatments — but as a non-pharmacological intervention they reliably move the needle on sleep latency and subjective stress.
