What is Sensate?

Sensate is a wearable device built around a simple premise: chronic stress lives in the nervous system, and the nervous system can be trained. Placed on the upper chest, the device delivers gentle infrasonic vibrations that propagate through the bones of the sternum and stimulate the vagus nerve — the longest cranial nerve and the master regulator of the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state.

Unlike meditation apps that require months of practice before benefits emerge, Sensate works on the physiology directly. Most users feel a measurable shift in heart-rate variability and breathing pattern in a single ten-minute session.

How it works

Two mechanisms operate in parallel. The first is bone conduction: low-frequency vibrations travel through the chest wall and activate vagal afferents that send a “safety” signal back to the brainstem. The second is auditory: synchronized soundscapes delivered through headphones engage the auditory cortex and entrain slower brain rhythms associated with relaxation.

The combined effect lowers cortisol, slows the breath, and shifts the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic dominance. Regular use — most clinicians recommend daily sessions for the first month — appears to raise the baseline level of vagal tone, which is one of the most robust biomarkers of resilience to stress.

What to expect

  • Better sleep onset: Many users fall asleep more easily and reach deeper stages of non-REM sleep when Sensate is used in the hour before bed.
  • Lower anxiety: A noticeable drop in racing thoughts and physical tension within minutes of starting a session.
  • Greater stress resilience: Over weeks of consistent use, the threshold for becoming dysregulated by everyday stressors rises.

Who is it for?

Sensate is a strong fit for people with insomnia, generalized anxiety, burnout from chronic work stress, or anyone whose Oura ring or wearable shows persistently low HRV. It also pairs well with our broader sleep-hacking and longevity protocols, where downregulating the sympathetic nervous system is a prerequisite for tissue repair and hormonal balance.

It is not a medical device and does not replace therapy for trauma or clinical anxiety disorders, but as a daily nervous-system reset it is one of the most effective non-pharmacological tools we recommend.

How to integrate it

Begin with one ten-minute session per day, ideally in the evening as part of a wind-down routine. Track sleep quality, morning HRV, and subjective stress for two weeks. From there, sessions can be added before stressful events or used to shorten the recovery window after intense training.
